Former President Uhuru Kenyatta Lands New AU Role

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta was assigned the role of leading the African Union election observation mission in South Africa on Monday.

In its announcement, the AU stated that the team, headed by a former leader, will include 60 temporary observers, among which are threeย mainย electoral experts.

The team will offer a report evaluating the quality of the general elections in South Africa, which are set to take place on May 29.

The report will assess how well the elections align with regional, continental, and international standards for democratic elections.

Uhuru’s team will provide suggestions for enhancing future elections based on their findings and showcase the African Union’s unity and backing for South Africa’s elections.

“The team will show support towards Southย Africaโ€™sย elections and democratization process to ensure that the conduct of democratic, credible, and peaceful elections contributes to the consolidation of democratic governance, peace, and stability,”ย read part of the statement by AU.

The election observation mission will also interact with various key stakeholders and monitor the last-minute preparations and the voting process.

The AU election observation mission will release its preliminary statement after the conclusion of the election process, according to the findings.

The African Union’s decision to establish an election observation team is consistent with its Agenda 2063, which seeks to promote good governance, democracy, human rights, justice, and adherence to the rule of law.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has previously been assigned the role of heading an election observation mission.

In February of the previous year, the former president was chosen to head another comparable team tasked with monitoring Nigeria’s elections, which occurred on February 25 of that year.

The 90-person team, under the leadership of Uhuru, consisted of representatives from AU member countries, including officials from electoral commissions, civil society, and independent specialists.
