Raila Appoints 2 MPs to Joint Parliamentary Inquiry Team Probing CDF Ogolla’s Death

On Tuesday, April 23, the Azimio Coalition, headed by Raila Odinga, declared the establishment of a joint Parliamentary investigation team to look into the accident and subsequent death of the late Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Francis Ogolla.

After the Azimio-One Kenya Parliamentary Group meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi County, Opiyo Wandayi, the National Assembly Minority Leader, announced that Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch and Kitui Senator Enock Wambua have been selected to lead the investigation.

Azimio-One Kenya Parliamentary Group meeting held on April 23, 2024.

Wandayi expressed concerns that the government might be obstructing the inquiry.

“We have authorized Anthony Oluoch and Enoch Wambua to lead a process of establishing a joint Parliamentary inquiry from both the Senate and National Assembly in the unfortunate death of Ogolla,” Wandayi stated.

“We are seeing worrying signs that Ruto set up a separate investigation team away from one Gazetted by his Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.”

Murkomen assembled a seven-member team to investigate aircraft registered or operated in Kenya that were involved in accidents.

On April 19, a team of military officials began an investigation in West Pokot, examining the site where CDF Ogolla’s helicopter crashed and caused his death the day before.

As a result, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen released a statement clarifying that his task force’s purpose was not to probe into Ogolla’s death.

“It is the exclusive mandate of the Kenya Defense Forces to investigate accidents involving military aircraft,” he explained adding that his ministry only deals with purely civil aviation both private and commercial.

Azimio viewed the situation as a calculated effort by the government to undermine the investigations.

A group of Azimio leaders, including Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, previously requested an inquiry to eliminate any suspicion of foul play in the general’s death.

Although Ogolla’s family requested the opposition team to dismiss rumors that the general may have been assassinated, these rumors persisted.
