On Sunday, April 14th, the Catholic Diocese of Makueni declared a prohibition on football and other sports activities within the county.

During his Sunday sermon at Wote Catholic Church, Father Nicholas Mbondi expressed discontent about the decision to reschedule sporting events from Saturday to Sunday.

He clarified that the Seventh-Day Adventist denomination was a religious minority in Makueni and emphasized the importance of not disrupting the observance of Sunday as a holy day.

โ€œUs other Christians of Catholic, African Inland Church (AIC), Jehovah’s Witness we are forced to have football played on Sundays because SDA worship on Saturday yet they are a minority in the region,โ€ he stated.

โ€œSports on Sundays must end, when it is played on Sunday it becomes a religion.โ€

He elaborated on how the county’s condition had worsened to the extent that certain young individuals were asserting that football had become akin to a religious belief.

During his plea to County Government officials present, Fr. Mbondi pledged that the church would spearhead a countywide initiative to prevent any sporting events from taking place on Sundays.

The priest made it clear that there would be no stopping until that goal was reached.

He articulated that involving young people in sports was depriving them of a suitable moral compass.

Father Mbondi pondered how the young could assume leadership roles in the future if they weren’t instilled with teachings about God during Sunday sessions.

โ€œFootball is okay but let it be played on the days which are allowed,โ€ he stated while banning Sunday sporting activities.

He stated that if the ban wasn’t implemented promptly, the Church would see a decline in choir members and other devoted followers.
