UDA MP Pressures Ruto to Fire IG Koome

Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematia has called on President William Ruto to dismiss Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome due to his inability to put an end to the rampant banditry in the area.

Speaking to a gathered crowd on Saturday, the politician criticized Koome for being inactive on the job instead of taking a proactive approach to tackle the issue.

She contended that casualties in the area persist while the inspector general stays silent regarding the issue.

“There is the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome. People are killed every day yet he is in Nairobi,” she lamented.

“You can’t be the police boss in Kenya and wait for a report when people are getting killed. Why should you wait for the report instead of going to investigate?” She stated.

Jemaita, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, consequently urges the Head of State to dismiss the Inspector General (IG) from his position and appoint a successor without delay.

She expressed sorrow over the growing challenge of protecting the state, especially given the recent fatalities in her county.

“We are asking the President to act on it because the task has defeated Koome. We are also in Government and it is hard to defend the government when people are dying,” she added.

“You cannot defend the government when my work is to bury people every day. I am not happy to be a leader of people who are suffering. We are asking the President because the buck stops with you.”

Jemaita’s perspective contributes to the increasing dissatisfaction among leaders from various factions regarding Koome’s handling of security issues in the region.

On April 1, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, a member of the governing party, urged him to step down due to his inability to resolve the conflict.

โ€œIf the IG (Koome) can not guarantee peace for Kenyans, he can step aside and pave the way for those with the ability to do so to take charge (of the docket),” he demanded.

President William Ruto expressed satisfaction with the peace initiatives during the North Rift gathering on March 30, following discussions with security officials including Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, IG Koome, and his two deputies, Douglas Kanja and Noor Gabow.

โ€œThe security operation in the North Rift has had a significant impact in restoring peace. Recent incidents of cattle rustling and banditry are being handled with new additional measures,” Ruto celebrated.
