Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf Rises to Rival Raila for AU Position

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio alliance, will encounter a fresh hurdle in his quest for the African Union Commission Chairperson position as Djibouti has put forth a candidate to rival the former prime minister.

In a statement released by the office of the President of Djibouti on April 9th, the nation declared its support for its Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, to run for the position.

Additionally, the statement conveyed the nation’s belief in the candidate, expressing confidence in his ability to succeed.

โ€œThe Republic of Djibouti officially announces the candidacy of its Minister of Foreign Affairs, M Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, for the post of President of the African Union Commission.โ€

โ€œDjibouti expresses faith in the capacity of Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, a man of experience and a seasoned diplomat, โ€œ read the communication in part.

Youssouf is poised to vie against Fawzia Yusuf Adam, the former foreign affairs minister of Somalia, and Raila Odinga of Kenya in the upcoming competition.

The nation has continued to support its nominee, highlighting his extensive experience gained during twenty years of service as the foreign minister of his country.

Youssouf has received acclaim for his adeptness in resolving conflicts and upholding peace within the nation throughout his time in office.

Additionally, enhancing his candidacy, the nation has observed that the Minister is proficient in three languages: English, French, and Arabic.

โ€œWith more than two decades of experience as Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country, a haven of peace which is distinguished by the constant search for conflict resolution through dialogue and negotiation,โ€ read the announcement in part.

The announcement follows shortly after President Ruto received endorsements from the Presidents of Guinea Bissau and Angola for Raila’s candidacy on April 6, during his official visit to Guinea Bissau.

With the emergence of the new candidate, competition for the top position within the African Union is poised to escalate specifically within the Eastern region of Africa. The AU’s Executive Council has reached a unanimous decision to restrict the candidacy for the seat to this particular region.
