Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria announced that he has approved the buyout of China Square’s lease at Kenyatta University’s Unicity Mall in Nairobi. China Square is a newly opened store.

The mall adjacent to Kenyatta University is said to be a hub for products and businesses, selling everything from clothing to electronics.

Some social media users asserted that China Square challenged the dominance of Eastleigh, Kamukunji, and Dubois Road in the Nairobi Central Business District by constructing a versatile shopping center.

However, Kuria’s tweet suggests that he believes Chinese investors in Kenya should prioritize manufacturing over-trading.

I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall and hand it over to the Gikomba,Nyamakima, Muthurwa l& Eastleigh Traders Association. We welcome Chinese investors to Kenya but as manufacturers not traders

“Today, I extended an offer to Prof. Wainaina, the vice chancellor of Kenyatta University, to purchase the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall, and transfer it to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa, and Eastleigh Traders Association. We welcome Chinese investors to Kenya, but only if they are manufacturers and not traders,” said Kuria.

Paying the current tenants or leaseholders a sum of money in exchange for the termination of their leases, after which the properties would be transferred to the local merchants.

Kuria’s tweet mentioned the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa, and Eastleigh Traders Associations, which are well-known organizations that represent traders in Nairobi’s bustling markets.

These markets are frequently regarded as the lifeblood of Kenya’s economy, as they provide affordable goods and services to millions of people and sustain livelihoods.

Kuria’s proposal has already sparked a lively discussion on social media, with some praising his dedication to supporting local merchants and others questioning its viability.
