Ruto’s Political Chess Explained: Kalonzo’s Opposition Seat Uncertain as Raila’s AU Dream Advances

Just a day after Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka asserted that he had secured an official opposition position via the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa expressed dissatisfaction.

On Saturday, March 30th, the ex-CS asserted that President William Ruto’s government entered negotiations without integrity, claiming that Azimio was unfairly treated.

Following a gathering in Mombasa, Eugene claimed that there was a collaboration between the Judiciary and Ruto’s administration to halt the execution of the NADCO report, which had suggested establishing a formal Office of the Opposition Leader.

As uncertainty looms over the establishment of the office, the government led by William Ruto is actively advocating for the candidacy of Raila Odinga, leader of Azimio, for the position of African Union Commission chairperson.

โ€œThe Bomas talks lacked good faith abinitio, as the Kenya Kwanza team did not come to the dialogue table with clean hands but was hiding dangerous cards under the table,โ€ Eugene Wamalwa lamented.

He claimed that Kenya Kwanza was undermining the process by purportedly backing a court decision on Friday, March 29, which halted the implementation of the NADCO report.

He also commented on the sluggish pace of deliberations by the Parliamentary Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) regarding the recommendations.

Wamalwa’s views were echoed by Kalonzo, who suggested that President Ruto was cautious about securing re-election in the 2027 polls.

He additionally claimed that the Executive was interfering with the Judiciary to obstruct the execution of the report.

โ€œThe Kenya Kwanza regime has never had goodwill and faith and this is the problem in Kenya; the politics of lies all the time,โ€ he stated.

Kalonzo stated on Wednesday, March 27th, that President Ruto appeared to be exerting pressure on leaders who appeared to have a positive rapport with him.

Specifically, he commented that the outgoing Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Peter Mathuki, was being relocated because of his strong association with him.

As Kalonzo expresses his feelings of isolation, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has been engaged in extensive continental shuttle diplomacy, advocating for Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the top position at the African Union Commission (AUC).
