University Student Commits Suicide Inside Parent’s House After Boyfriend Dumps Her

Police officers in Kericho County are investigating the death of a 19-year-old who was found dead in the corridor of her family’s residence.

The student is reported to have hanged self following allegations that she was dumped by her boyfriend.

Officers who arrived at the scene, however, noted that investigations are ongoing to establish the motive as no suicide note was found.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the student, who was nine months pregnant, was heart-wrenched following the breakup.

The deceased’s body is said to have been discovered in the morning by the mother who woke up early due to the Easter family celebrations.

The mother sounded a cry of distress, which alerted other family members and neighbors who rushed to the scene and attempted to rescue the student. She, however, had already passed away.

The neighbours reported the matter to Kericho Police Station who rushed to the scene.

The student’s body was transferred to Kericho Referral Hospital Mortuary.

The incident highlights the worrying situation among students who end up ending their lives owing to relationship issues.

According to data from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the suicide rate among men in Kenya is four times that of women in the past two decades.

The main factors leading to the rise in these cases include depression, mental illness, broken relationships, economic hardships, and loneliness among others.

Human rights advocates have called for mental wellness programs to be introduced in public institutions such as universities to curb the rise in cases among the youth.
