Ksh280K Raised by Foreigners Within Hours to Fulfill US Teenager’s Wish for Kenya

Wellwishers on Friday raised over Ksh280,000 to assist a United States-based teenager get an opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya for a volunteering mission.

According to the GoFundMe page, Grace Laws sought to raise a total of Ksh600,000 from wellwishers to cater for the travel and living costs.

She observed that the experience of accumulating over 160 hours of volunteering work as part of a medical camp team would be tremendously valuable for her as an undergraduate student in South Carolina.

Laws is presently a pre-med student majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at Citadel Military College of South Carolina. She holds the rank of a sophomore Cadet.

“The Citadel offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya to volunteer in their medical camp in May. I have been accepted on this trip but travel costs are high. I ask for any donation to aid in my travel and living costs,” read part of the profile on the GoFundMe page.

She noted that her application underwent a strenuous process to be approved as the college reviewed several aspects.

“The application process for medical school looks for many different aspects as an applicant. Service and experience are typically highly regarded on a resume.”

“The medical camp in Kenya allows for me to get 160+ hours of volunteer hours and experience that is very difficult to get as an undergraduate student in the United States!”

Laws explained that following the trip, she plans on graduating in 2025 and applying to the medical sector in the Army.

“After graduation, I will be commissioned into the Army as a second Lieutenant! I hope to serve in the Medical Corps as a flight surgeon upon my completion of medical school.”

Laws’ charity aspirations come as ten students from St Paul’s College in Dublin, Ireland received Ksh1 million for a volunteering mission in several schools in Kenya.

The mission is set to make a positive impact and contribute to the local communities such as Kamulu in Nairobi.
