KTN Reporter Flees Threats Amid Trans Nzoia Chaos Coverage

Osinde Obare, a reporter affiliated with the Standard Media Group, alleged that he received threats on Thursday in response to his reporting on the disturbances observed during a burial event in Trans-Nzoia County the previous week.

At the funeral scheduled for March 22, pandemonium broke out when followers of a prominent Kenya Kwanza leader clashed with supporters of a Governor representing the Western region.

The reporter from Standard has stated that his reporting of the events on that specific day has displeased high-ranking politicians, leading to threats against his life.

The journalist expressed more dismay, noting that despite his report, the local police had not made any arrests. The individuals purportedly threatening him are familiar figures within that specific locality.

โ€œOn Monday I heard movements outside my house, and people knocking roughly,โ€ he narrated.

โ€œI told my wife to stay quiet as the people knocking were not talking. We waited until they left.โ€

The reporter has now disappeared and is urging the authorities to control those who are threatening him.

Interest groups comprised of individuals from Trans Nzoia County are urging the local police to look into the allegations and facilitate the journalist’s safe return home so that he can resume his professional duties.

โ€œWe want the government to give him protection, and upkeep money to sustain him wherever he is hiding,โ€ activist Boniface Kiranga stated.

โ€œHis family does not know where he is, and he is their sole provider.โ€

In February, Obare, a seasoned employee of the mainstream media organization, was once more subjected to an attack while reporting on events along the Kitale-Kapenguria road.

The journalist stated that he was capturing footage of EACC officials apprehending a police officer on suspicion of soliciting bribes along that particular road.
