My Office Misbehaved- Ruto CS Concedes During Probe
On Wednesday, March 27, Alice Wahome, the Cabinet Secretary for Lands, acknowledged her error in granting a title deed for government land to a private developer in Nairobi.
Wahome, who presented himself before the Senate, was assigned the responsibility of resolving the disputes surrounding the ownership of the land in Makadara, where the Tom Mboya Social Hall is located.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna questioned the process through which the Ministry of Land granted government-owned land to a private developer who had already commenced construction on the property.
The senator urged the CS to assess the measures the Ministry of Land intended to implement to prevent occurrences of land grabbing, such as the unlawful acquisition of the Makadara land.
When discussing the acquisition of the land, Wahome clarified that it had been leased to the Kenya Africa National Union (KANU) in 1985.
Before the lease agreement, the land was designated for the construction of a Community Hall by the Ministry of Public Works on June 26, 1957, under the directive of the governor at that time.

A document granting rights to KANU was issued on April 12, 1985, for 99 years. However, on February 22, 2021, the property was inadvertently transferred to a private developer.
“I confirm Gami got an irregular allocation and I will proceed to cancel that title. It is going to remain public property,” CS Alice Wahome stated.
“My office misbehaved. The parcel having been registered as a social hall should remain as such,” Wahome added
CS Alice Wahome’s statement comes one month after she dismisses land officials in Kiambu County over accusations of collaborating with cartels to unlawfully acquire cemetery land.
“From the records and maps that we have, it is clear that this is public land. How it was reverted to a private developer is a mystery. But for now, it will remain so. No development should be done in this area,” noted the CS.
Wahome additionally instructed the police officers, who had been safeguarding the suspected land encroachers, to depart the location without delay.
