India Abstains from UN Vote on Russian Invasion of Ukraine

India abstained once more from voting on a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began a year ago.

141 nations supported the motion, while 32 nations abstained and seven, including Russia, voted against it.

India reaffirmed its position on the invasion, stating that the only way out was through peaceful dialogue.

Delhi is under increasing pressure to take a firm stance against Russia.

Numerous nations, including the United States and Ukraine, have publicly urged Delhi to take a firm stance and “do the right thing.”

India has resisted the pressure and maintained its policy of not directly criticizing Russia. In the past, it has abstained from similar resolutions at both the UNGA and the UNSC.

Since the end of the Cold War, the two nations have had a long-standing, mutually respectful relationship. Russia is also India’s largest arms supplier, even though its share has decreased in recent years due to Delhi’s decision to increase domestic defense production and a broader import portfolio.

The two nations also have a history of diplomatic cooperation; Moscow has vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding the contested region of Kashmir.

In its previous statements on Ukraine, Delhi has emphasized the significance of “the UN Charter, international law, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.”

Ruchira Kamboj, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, stated during a vote on Friday that “no solution can ever be reached at the expense of human lives.”

New York’s UN resolution demanded immediate peace and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while rejecting any Russian claims to occupied territory.

In September, Moscow parliamentarians voted to illegally annex four Ukrainian regions.

Addition, the UN demanded “that the Russian Federation immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders” and demanded an end to hostilities.

In addition to India, China, Iran, and South Africa were among the 32 nations that abstained from voting.

Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, and Syria were the seven countries that voted against it.
