June Chepkemei Named Kenya Tourism Board CEO

June Chepkemei, previously the managing director of the Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest), has assumed a fresh position within the Kenya Tourism Board.

Chepkemoi has been named as the CEO of the Board, succeeding John Chirchir, who has been temporarily holding the position since November 2022.

Her designation is specified within Gazette Notice number 3226 issued on March 19th.

โ€œIn exercise of the powers conferred by Section 37(1) of the Tourism Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife appoints June Teclar Chepkemei to be the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Tourism Board,โ€ reads the notice in part.

Alfred Mutua, the Tourism Cabinet Secretary, affirmed the appointment, stating that it aligns with the regulations outlined in the Tourism Act, cap. 83.

It is set to take effect beginning March 20 for three years.

The change occurred just one year after Moses Kuria, who was the Trade Cabinet Secretary at the time, selected her to lead KenInvest in place of Olivia Rachier.

โ€œThe appointment, tasks June with the responsibility of spearheading strategies to attract and grow investments to the country from the current Sh62.3 billion to Sh1.2 trillion by the end of 2023,โ€ Kuria said then, in the statement.

Before this, she served as the Marketing and Communications lead at the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA).

Before becoming part of the authority, June collaborated with Safaricom as a communications business partner and also had experience working with Kass Media International.

Additionally, she has been part of the task force responsible for crafting the Kenya Media Policy Guidelines.

KTB is a governmental entity formed and governed by the provisions of the Tourism Act 2011.

Its task is to formulate, execute, and synchronize a comprehensive marketing plan for Kenya’s tourism industry, promoting it domestically, nationally, regionally, and globally as a top-tier tourist spot.

The board’s objective also includes recognizing the demands and trends within the tourism market and providing guidance to relevant stakeholders in the tourism industry.

Carry out any additional tasks that are supportive of the objectives and aims for which the Tourism Board was formed.
