90% Of Men Put Their Wives As Next Of Kin – Research
At least 90 percent of married men in Uganda designate their wives as their next of kin while only 30 percent of women do the same, Ugandan lawyer Sim Katende has claimed.
Speaking in Kampala during a resource network for family businesses organized by l&M Bank and Enjovu Family Business, Katende purported that research conducted by Uganda’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF) had revealed the notable trend among Ugandan men of entrusting their wives with the responsibility of preserving the family legacy after their deaths.
“Anybody who has dealt NSSF; carried out a survey and discovered that 90 percent of men keep their spouses as their next of kin, while less than 30 percent of women write their men as next of kin,” Katende was quoted as saying by the Monitor publication.

Katende referenced the alleged NSSF data while discussing the challenges facing family businesses in Uganda, highlighting that the failure of business owners to plan for unforeseen circumstances such as death had resulted in the collapse of numerous businesses.
He further highlighted that despite 80% of businesses in Uganda being family-owned, many of them encounter difficulties when owners pass away without a defined succession plan.
“If you do the planning, you will minimize wrangles and if you don’t, there will be wrangles. Most cases in law firms are land-related with relatives and siblings fighting for land,” he said.
“We have those who are fighting for their grandfather’s land. Some claim land that was donated by their grandfathers 100 years later. So, if you don’t make these things clear, they will keep going.”
