Kisii Deputy Governor Monda Appeals Impeachment

Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda Tuesday set off to fight his impeachment in court.

Lawyers representing him said they had applied for ex-parte hearings before Judge Teresa Odera at the Kisii Law Courts late Tuesday.

“Yes we did the filing and the judge granted March 26, 2024, as the hearing date,” stated Wilkins Achoki one of the two lawyers representing Dr Monda.

Monda is also being represented by Katwa Kigeni.

Judge Odera, in court papers, ordered Tuesday that the same be served to the relevant parties ahead of the hearing.

” I have carefully considered the application dated 18th,03,2024 ex-parte. The same be served. The interparte hearing set 26th, 03,2024 at 10 am,” stated Odera.

Monda is making his last effort to save his political career after the Senate upheld his impeachment after a two-day deliberations.

The Deputy Governor was sent home by Senate on the strength of evidence adduced on the allegations that he received a Sh800,000 bribe from Dennis Mokaya with the promise he was to secure him a commercial manager position at the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company.

He was also accused of instigating the arrest and detention of his brother, Reuben Monda, for cutting down some trees on the family land among other charges.

Kisii County Governor Simba Arati is expected to Gazette a vacancy seeking his replacement by Thursday this week.

In the event of a void in the deputy governor’s office, the constitution gives governors leeway to make fresh nominations within 14 days to replace their deputies.

The Deputy may have either resigned, died in office or been impeached.

The nominees will then have to be approved by the County Assembly within 60 days.

Successful appointees then take the oath.
