Sister Reveals NTV Journalist Rita Tinina’s Last Moments & Illness Suffered Before Death

Fresh information has surfaced regarding the events leading to the passing of NTV reporter Rita Tinina.

A report lodged at Kileleshwa Police Station on Sunday, following the discovery of her unconsciousness at her residence, stated that she was afflicted with epilepsy.

The report, citing the sister of the deceased, stated that Tinina had suffered from a high fever for five days leading up to her passing.

The report also indicated that Helen Silau Njaga, Tinina’s sibling, made the initial report around 10:45 am upon discovering her unconscious body.

She pointed out that the 46-year-old journalist was discovered unconscious in her bed at her residence in Kileleshwa.

Silau hurried to her residence and upon her arrival, she discovered Tinina unconscious. She promptly called for medical help, and upon their arrival, paramedics confirmed that Tinina was already deceased.

At the time of her death, she resided with her daughter, who was eight years old.

The police moved the deceased’s body to Umash Funeral Home as they began their investigation into the incident.

“On behalf of Yiapan’s family, this has come as a shock to us. We are trying to digest and at the moment we just request for the privacy to be accorded to the family. More information will come letter,” Silau told the press.

The journalist’s passing plunged the entire media sector nationwide into grief, with many reporters praising her as a pioneering figure.

Hussein Mohamed, the spokesperson for the State House, recounted a situation where Tinina assisted in submitting a report when his equipment malfunctioned during critical coverage.

“Rita bailed me out once during my time at Citizen TV, helping me file a story when our equipment failed at an EAC Heads of State Summit in Arusha during Kibakiโ€™s presidency,” he recalled.

“It was my first interaction with her, as she was already a household name in the media, while I was a rookie at the time. Nonetheless, she displayed grace then, as she always has. My condolences to friends and family.”

ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, meanwhile, highlighted Tinina’s significant contributions to the field.

“During this time of mourning, may the loved ones of Tinina find comfort in the knowledge that she made a significant and meaningful contribution to the field of journalism,” he stated.

Tinina worked at the Nation Media Group (NMG) before joining KTN News in 2012 where she worked as a senior reporter before returning to NTV in October 2023.
