Police Officer and Governor Orengo’s Driver Beat Up and Rob Man

Three individuals were brought before the Bondo Law Courts on Friday, March 15, facing charges related to violent robbery.

One of the individuals involved was a law enforcement officer along with Governor James Orengo’s chauffeur. They were apprehended following accusations of assaulting and robbing a human rights advocate in the Olago vicinity of Sakwa.

Based on a police report, the individuals physically attacked the activist and forcefully took Ksh20,000 in cash from him after assaulting him.

The report also mentioned that the trio stole spectacles valued at Ksh41,000, as well as an ATM card and an NHIF card, before injuring the man and leaving him in distress.

The presiding judge overseeing the trial advised the defendant to avoid communication with both the witnesses and the victim upon their release on a bond of Ksh300,000.

“Taking into consideration the nature of the case, I will grant the accused as is their Constitutional right, a bond of Ksh300,000, with a surety of a similar amount,” the judge stated.

The pre-trial for the case is scheduled to be mentioned on April 2, 2024.

In a comparable occurrence, authorities from Busia were apprehended in February for pilfering Ksh2 million from a businessperson.

Based on information received, law enforcement officials conducted a surprise attack on four individuals believed to be involved in the robbery, catching them off guard in the parking lot of a nearby hotel. During the operation, they seized Ksh500,000 in cash.

The quartet was apprehended at a police facility. Initial inquiries revealed that among them were a corporal and a police inspector serving in Busia County.

The quartet, which includes a businessman alleged to have assisted the authorities in carrying out the offense, was formally charged at the Busia law courts on February 29, 2024.

“The prosecution made their argument to transfer the matter to another station, but our position is there is no application for transfer of the case to any other station,” the court stated in response to a report requesting a transfer of the case to a court outside Busia County.
