Haitian factions have been instructed by the United States to appoint a representative to the transitional council within the next 24 hours. This council is poised to assume control after the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

As per information from Reuters, an official from the United States Department revealed that the interim council would include a religious figure, a representative from civil society, a delegate from a Haitian faction, and individuals from diverse political and business backgrounds.

The official also mentioned that the responsibility of the council would include selecting the temporary prime minister and forming a body to supervise the electoral proceedings.

Currently, there has been no official communication from Jimmy Cherizier, a former police officer and leader of the G9 and Family faction, regarding the matter.

Cherizier instilled fear across the nation after Henry departed to Kenya to finalize an agreement for sending 1,000 officers on a peacekeeping mission.

He cautioned Henry against coming back to the nation and submitting his resignation while advocating for the liberation of the Haitian population.

    Haiti Situation After Henry’s Resignation

On the 12th of March, Tuesday, the conditions in Port-au-Prince improved as armed individuals withdrew from the primary airport of the country.

Additionally, the primary cargo port resumed its operations, and various government offices reopened. Concurrently, ongoing evacuations took place, with helicopters landing in the capital to transport international visitors and dignitaries out of the country.

Stephane Dujarric, a spokesperson for the United Nations, stated that the international organization has decided to decrease the presence of unnecessary staff in Haiti.

The United States exerted pressure on Henry to expedite the implementation of democratic elections. In response to protests from various Haitian factions, Henry declared his intention to step down, clearing the path for the upcoming elections.

“The government that I’m leading will resign immediately after the installation of a council. I’m asking all Haitians to remain calm and do everything they can for the peace and stability to come back as fast as possible,” Henry stated on Monday.

The peacekeeping mission in Haiti faced a setback when Henry’s resignation led to the confirmation by Sing’oei Korir, the Foreign Affairs PS, that the dispatch of 1,000 police officers to the country was temporarily postponed.
