Elusive US Fugitive Kevin Kang’ethe Dodges Court Appearance- Here is Why
Kevin Kinyanjui Kang’ethe, a murder suspect and American fugitive, was scheduled to attend a significant court session on February 19 for a crucial hearing related to his extradition to the United States.
Nevertheless, the legal proceedings were postponed until Tuesday, February 27, 2024, causing the family of the victim, Margaret Mbitu, to be in a state of shock and disbelief.
Family members of Mbitu, commonly referred to as Maggie, who is said to have been killed by Kang’ethe and discovered deceased in a vehicle at a Boston airport, appeared at Milimani High Court ready for the trial.
They voiced their dissatisfaction with the absence of communication concerning the alteration in the court date.
“No one communicated to us about the change of date, and that is why we came here,” lamented a relative identified only as Muthoni, highlighting the confusion surrounding the scheduling of the proceedings.
Kang’ethe’s true motives were revealed when he disclosed to Mbitu his intention to permanently come back to Kenya, abandoning his life in the United States for her.
Unfortunately, Mbitu was oblivious to Kang’ethe’s hidden intentions, purportedly resulting in her premature death.
Detectives uncovered that Kang’ethe carefully orchestrated his getaway, buying airline tickets to Nairobi just before carrying out the homicide.

For a period of three months, he successfully avoided detection by authorities, regularly visiting entertainment venues in Westlands and Kiambu Road.
Nevertheless, his fortunate streak came to an end when detectives, who had been monitoring him since a warrant for his arrest was issued in the US, apprehended him as he exited an entertainment venue in Westlands.
Kang’ethe was later brought before the court, and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) was given a 30-day period to coordinate his extradition to the United States.
Following a brief escape from detention at Muthaiga Police Station, Kang’ethe was apprehended again, courtesy of information provided by his family members. He had been living in a flat belonging to a cousin, intending to avoid law enforcement and evade legal consequences.
While Kang’ethe anticipates the extradition proceedings at Muthaiga Police Station, the family of the victim persists in their quest for justice on behalf of their dearly departed Mbitu, whose life abruptly ended in tragedy.
