Court Frees Two Nigerians Linked To Rita Waeni’s Murder

Makadara Law Court has ordered the release of two Nigerian individuals, William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbour, who were previously arrested in connection with the murder of Rita Waeni, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

The two suspects had been held in police custody since January 22, 2024, following a court decision that permitted their detention to facilitate ongoing investigations into the case.

The court presided over by Magistrate Agnes Mwangi, granted the release of Opia and Asbour, stipulating that they must regularly present themselves before investigators every week.

The decision to release the suspects was made while acknowledging that the prosecution’s investigation was still in progress.

The tragic incident unfolded on January 14, 2024, when Waeni’s lifeless body was discovered in a short-term accommodation apartment in the Roysambu area of Nairobi.ย

The grim discovery revealed that her body had been dismembered, with her head notably missing. The subsequent search for her head led to its discovery at a dam in Kiambu County on January 21.

As the investigations continued, the prosecution emphasized the ongoing nature of their efforts to gather evidence and build a comprehensive case.

The release of the Nigerian nationals marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the murder, and the court’s directive for regular appearances before investigators underscores the need for continued cooperation in the ongoing inquiry.

Rita Waeni’s untimely death had deeply impacted the community, and she was laid to rest in a private ceremony on February 5, 2024.

The circumstances surrounding her tragic demise continue to unfold as the legal process evolves, shedding light on the complexities of the case and the efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
