Gachagua Reveals How Governor’s Life Was Threatened After Exposing Tycoons
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua disclosed that Embu Governor Cecil Mbarire faced a threat to her life following her confrontation with powerful groups in the coffee sector.
Addressing a fundraising event in Muranga, Gachagua revealed that the governor had been followed by unidentified vehicles shortly after publicly identifying influential companies exploiting farmers at a coffee reforms meeting in 2023.
The spokesperson mentioned that the government had to enhance her security measures to ensure her safety.
“This governor once took them on and they began to look for her. I had to beef up her security. They were trailing her with cars because she named them. We must have very courageous leaders,” he stated.
As per the DP, the cartels consist of influential individuals who wield control over the entire coffee supply chain.
He mentioned that the group holds significant influence, which is why President William Ruto assigned him the responsibility of overseeing reforms in the sector. This decision was based on his extensive security background and expertise.
“Those fellows have been unfair to our farmers. Nobody would have done these reforms apart from the Presidency. That is why the President directed me to do it. These people are very influential and powerful.
“They corrupt everybody in the whole chain except the Presidency. We also have enough security,” he added.

Nevertheless, he asserted that the government would persist in implementing the reforms until farmers received fair compensation for their labor.
In June 2023, Mbarire expressed concern over the fact that influential corporations were gaining profits while farmers invested millions in cultivating a commodity, primarily destined for export, thus putting the burden on the farmers.
During the gathering led by Gachagua, Mbarire claimed that certain multinational corporations established subsidiary entities to exert control over the entire industry, spanning from milling to exportation.
“Our coffee sector is predominantly run by three companies. They mill through separate companies and then transform themselves into marketers and buyers.
“If we do not deal with these cartels, we will be wasting two days here. It is about time we face these people on the face and say enough is enough,” she exposed.
Following Mbarire’s assertions, the government nullified the licenses of all companies possessing the necessary entities, mandating them to reapply for licenses.
