Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa inaugurated as Meru University Chancellor(Photos)
The Meru University of Science and Technology celebrated with grandeur and vibrancy on Friday during the official inauguration of Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa as the institution’s second Chancellor.
Ndegwa assumes the role previously held by James Mwangi as the CEO of Equity Bank.
The CEO of the telecommunications company received various symbols of authority, such as the mace, the University Charter, and a portrait.
Beatrice Muganda, the Chairperson of the University Council, Jane Kiringai, and Vice-Chancellor Romanus Otieno, along with other esteemed guests, were in attendance at the State Department of University Education’s event.
President William Ruto designated him on November 1, 2023, to serve for a period of five years.
Mwangi, who served as the chancellor of the institution for ten years, expressed that he successfully transformed it from a polytechnic into a globally recognized research university.
“I am leaving Meru University with memories of ten years we have worked together to bring life to the vision and mission of this university. In these ten years I have been in situations where I have thought it special that am getting to experience this,” Mwangi said.
During his address, Ndegwa expressed his commitment to turning Meru University into a prominent institution specializing in the fields of science and technology.

The CEO acknowledged the significant increase in student enrollment, which has risen from 4,000 to 12,000 in the past five months. He emphasized the importance of hiring additional staff and faculty to ensure adequate support for the growing number of students.
“I am particularly keen to create keen to avail opportunities for students through the development of digital skills. I can commit these through various programs we have at Safaricom,” he said.
He mentioned that the university’s emphasis on cultivating students in science and technology prompts organizations like Safaricom to organize yearly events. These gatherings aim to enlighten students about the upcoming trends in technology and prepare them for the real-world scenarios they will encounter upon graduation.
The Vice Chancellor of Meru University, Romanus Otieno, expressed gratitude to the departing Chancellor, Mwangi, for his committed service during the ten years he served as the university’s leader.
Otieno expressed that the incoming Chancellor Ndegwa won’t step into Mwangi’s shoes, but instead, will serve as a cobbler for those shoes.
He described both Mwangi and Ndegwa as people who are down to earth.
