Ruto Revokes Appointment: Murkomen Taps Duale’s Kin for Key Role

The Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, has selected Abdi Bare Duale, the brother of Defence CS Aden Duale, to serve as the chairman of the Kenya Railways Corporation board.

In a Gazette Notice released last Friday, it was announced that Abdi will commence a three-year term starting on February 9, 2024.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4(a) of the Kenya Railway Corporation Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints Abdi Bare Duale to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024,” the notice read in part.

In the announcement, President William Ruto rescinded Bare’s designation as the chairperson of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) board, a year following his initial appointment.

Muhumed Abdi Mohamed was appointed to replace him for three years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 3 (a) of the Articles of Association of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, and section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoints Muhumed Abdi Mohamed to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024.

“The appointment of Abdi Bare Duale is revoked,” the notice read in part.

Abdi has taken leadership roles on various boards during both Ruto and the tenure of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In June 2017, former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich selected him to join the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) board, with a term of three years. Unfortunately, his tenure was brief as President Uhuru revoked his appointment just one year later.

Abdi was later appointed as the chair of the board at the Kenya Leather Development Council. Additionally, he has previously held a position as a board member at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

Duale’s sibling has earned a Master’s degree in International Trade from Edith Cowan University located in Australia.

In additional nominations, the Minister of Education, Ezekiel Machogu, designated Hawo Shanko to serve as a council member at the North Eastern National Polytechnic for a three-year term.

Conversely, Tourism CS Alfred Mutua appointed Dr. Yussuf Adan as a member of the Board of Directors for the Wildlife Research and Training Institute.
