From Robbed at Gunpoint to Monica Kimani Case: Career Highlights of Lady Justice Grace Nzioka

The six-year-long murder case of businesswoman Monica Kimani, which implicated former Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe and Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, has finally concluded.

In the verdict announced on Friday, February 9, Lady Justice Grace Nzioka cleared Maribe of all accusations, whereas Jowie was convicted of the homicide.

Apart from the verdict, onlookers promptly turned their attention to Justice Nzioka, who played a central role in the case.

In the course of the legal proceedings, individuals on the internet from Kenya commended Nzioka for her skillful and proficient delivery of the verdict, praising her expertise in the field of law.

“I assure you that I have analyzed all submissions and evidence. I can read this judgment for six hours without a paper in my hand,” Justice Nzioka stated.

Most Kenyans praised Nzioka for her composure and articulate delivery while interpreting the judgment.

“I like the eloquent, composed, and articulate nature of Justice Grace Nzioka. She’s reading the judgment from her head. I am sure even Joseph Irungu Jowie, former Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, and the family of late businesswoman Monica Kimani like how she is doing it,” Alinur Mohamed stated.

“I love the poise, eloquence, and clarity that Justice Grace Nzioka is delivering her judgment as if the words flow directly from her mind. It’s captivating โ€”Joseph Irungu Jowie, former Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, and even the family of the late businesswoman Monica Kimani,” Mumbi added.

Nevertheless, limited information is available regarding the Justice who has been central to the case from the beginning.

    Robbery Victim

In 2013, Justice Nzioka experienced a robbery when she was carjacked and abducted from her residence in Karen, Nairobi.

While entering her residence, the judge encountered a situation where five armed individuals seized her and held her captive.

According to the reports, she was compelled to enter her residence while armed individuals pilfered various items, including documents, a laptop, a television, and other electronic devices.

According to reports, Justice Nzioka and her spouse were seized by armed individuals who then transported them from their residence to the Dagoretti area. During this incident, the perpetrators allegedly withdrew more than Ksh40,000 from their ATM accounts.

Moments later, the two were abandoned in the Kangemi area.

Authorities looking into the matter aimed to find out the reasons behind the judge’s security personnel being without weapons during the occurrence.

The authorities also aimed to examine if the occurrence was connected to her professional responsibilities. At that moment, she was leading a committee looking into the Tana River conflicts, which had resulted in over 160 casualties and the displacement of numerous individuals.

    Profile Cases

Justice Nzioka has actively participated in numerous notable legal matters, such as the Ksh1.5 billion case concerning former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju. In this particular case, she opted to withdraw, explaining her inability to continue with the proceedings. Instead, she recommended that the issue be brought up before the presiding judge of the Commercial Division.

September 2022, Chief Justice Martha Koome relocated from Nairobi to Naivasha High Court as part of adjustments made in response to the promotion of six Court of Appeal Judges.

In addition to overseeing legal issues, Justice Nzioka has previously championed the rights of marginalized individuals in the community. In November 2023, she actively promoted the establishment of child protection units at multiple stations to address the accumulation of unresolved minor cases.

She observed that Naivasha Police Station managed more than 150 criminal cases, emphasizing the Judiciary’s commitment to alleviating the backlog.
