Tiaty MP William Kamket in DCI Custody for Alleged Incitement Speech

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehended William Kamket, the Member of Parliament for Tiaty, on Wednesday, February 7, around 2 pm, and subsequently held him at Nakuru Central Police Station, as reported by his legal representative.

According to reports, Kamket was arrested at his workplace and remained in police custody overnight as his lawyer’s requests for his release were rejected.

Attorney Lemmy Langโ€™at reported that Kamket was apprehended on accusations of encouraging Tiaty residents to engage in conflict over the Sugoti area, a region the MP wishes to include in his constituency.

Kamket’s legal representatives mentioned that they were instructed to anticipate his arraignment at the Nakuru Law courts. Nevertheless, they have not yet been informed about the specific date and time of his scheduled appearance.

The DCI officers reportedly questioned him regarding statements that were deemed to be on the verge of incitement, hate speech, and violence.

Political figures representing the Tiaty constituency called for the release of Kamket and requested the disclosure of the charge sheet outlining the accusations against him.

โ€œMP Tiaty William Kamket was arrested by DCI under unclear circumstances at Nakuru and is currently held up at Nakuru Central police station. The arrest is a mockery for the legislature has been preaching peace all along,โ€ Tirioko MCA Lokales Sam Lourien stated.

Lokales emphasized to the residents of Tiaty that they should await further instructions regarding the next steps while efforts are ongoing to secure his release.

โ€œOn behalf of Tiaty leadership, we request our people to stay calm as we wait for our lawyers to brief us and further action from our courts,โ€ Lokales added.

In October 2023, Kamket was called in and extensively questioned at the Rift Valley Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nakuru County regarding accusations of incitement to violence.

Additional leaders from the Rift Valley area, such as Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong and West Pokot Senator Julius Murgor, were likewise called upon under similar allegations.

Several days following the arrests, Kithure Kindiki, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, directed security agencies in regions prone to banditry to capture leaders allegedly responsible for inciting the attacks.

โ€œSecurity agencies are instructed to crack down on all political, commercial, and spiritual enablers of banditry as well as key planners and commanders of bandit attacks,โ€ CS Kindiki ordered.
