Expiry Date For NHIF Cards Revealed- Valid Till December 2024
Dr. Robert Pukose, Chairperson of the National Assembly Health Committee, has disclosed that the existing National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) cards will remain effective until December 2024.
In an interview on Spice FM on Wednesday morning, Pukose explained that Kenyans will have continuous access to NHIF services throughout the year before making the switch to the newly introduced Social Healthcare Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Moreover, he mentioned that individuals interested in enrolling for NHIF services may proceed to do so until the conclusion of the year, which marks the official transition to SHIF.
Additionally, providing insight into the shift to SHIF, the parliamentarian disclosed that the Social Health Authority (SHA) has not yet achieved full operational status. Currently, the recently formed agency is dependent on NHIF personnel and the secretariat.
“There are no individuals who have been hired for the SHA, what has happened is that there has been a gazettement of the board of the SHA, but none has been hired,” clarified Pukose”
Nevertheless, he pointed out that there existed a transition committee officially announced by the Health Cabinet Secretary. This committee was tasked with overseeing the transition process and providing a report to Parliament.
The transition committee must provide ongoing updates regarding its activities, specifically regarding assets, liabilities, and functionality, throughout a six-month period. Additionally, a final report is required upon the completion of its mandate.

Pukose also made it clear that, up to this point, no payments or donations have been submitted to the SHIF.
The anticipated replacement for NHIF, known as SHIF, is set to commence compulsory registration of Kenyan citizens in January.
Susan Nakhumicha, the Health Cabinet Secretary, has also disclosed that the initial sign-up for SHIF will involve a self-registration procedure.
The anticipated outcome of the self-registration process is to ensure a smooth and minimally disruptive transition for the people of Kenya.
Nevertheless, despite receiving approval from the Court of Appeal, the implementation of SHIF continues to face opposition from various stakeholders.
The Council of Governors expressed opposition on Tuesday to the revenue-sharing suggestions between counties and the national government. They argued that the proposals did not take into account the State House Infrastructure Fund (SHIF), National Social Security Fund (NSSF), and the temporarily suspended Housing Levy.
