Govt Announces How Kenyans Will Migrate From NHIF to SHIF; Registration Procedure
Susan Nakhumicha, the Health Cabinet Secretary, declared that the government is initiating a new registration procedure for the Social Healthcare Insurance Fund (SHIF), encouraging Kenyan citizens to take part in the process.
Addressing a public engagement event in Wote, Makueni County, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted that citizens will need to undergo a new registration process for the upcoming health coverage. She described this procedure as smooth and straightforward.
Additional information about the registration process indicated that, in the initial registration of the SHIF, Kenyans will be required to undergo a self-registration procedure.
According to the CS, the self-registration process is expected to reduce costs for the onboarding process as well as ensure an un-eventful registration process.
“The planned fresh member registration to SHA will be done seamlessly with minimal impact on Kenyans. It will also keep costs as low as possible through initial self-registrations,” CS Nakhumicha.
At the occasion, the CS also mentioned that the transformation of the Social Health Authority into a digital format would play a crucial role in realizing the portability of medical health.

The Chief Secretary additionally revealed that the upcoming SHIF will encompass services like assistive devices, aiming to broaden the range of healthcare coverage.
The SHIF’s new registration aligns with the government’s directive from January 22, which mandates the compulsory registration of every Kenyan with SHIF.
Furthermore, the government has established 25 as the compulsory age for registration, amid anticipations related to the upcoming health coverage.
Nevertheless, the initiative faced significant resistance, but the government secured the opportunity to enforce the Act on January 19 following the Court of Appeal’s decision to lift previous injunctions that had hindered its implementation.
Several organizations have expressed their disagreement with the implementation, with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) rejecting the suggested fees, stating that they are excessively high.
Nevertheless, the authorities assert that the execution of the plan holds importance and will encompass compulsory enrollment for individuals in the informal sector within Kenya.
