Nangolo Mbumba Sworn in as Namibia’s Fourth President

Eighty-two-year-old Dr. Nangolo Mbumba has been sworn in as the fourth President.

Mbumba is Namibiaโ€™s former Vice President and has held the position since 2018.

He was sworn in on Sunday by Chief Justice Peter Shivute in Windhoek, the countryโ€™s capital.

Born on August 15, 1941, Mbumba is a member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO). He headed several Namibian ministries: Agriculture, Water and Rural Development (1993โ€“1996), Finance (1996โ€“2003), Information and Broadcasting (2003โ€“2005) Education (2005โ€“2010) and Safety and Security (2010โ€“2012).

From 2012 to 2017, he was the secretary-general of SWAPO.

Consequently, Mbumba announced Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as Namibia’s new Vice-President.

Namibia is in mourning after President Hage G. Geingob passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Lady Pohamba Hospital.

The 82-year-old leader, surrounded by his wife, Madame Monica Geingos, and children, succumbed to his battle with cancer at approximately 12:04 am.

Mbumba, delivering the somber news, expressed deep regret, stating, “It is with utmost sadness that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob has passed on. Despite the tireless efforts of his medical team, President Geingob, sadly, did not recover.”

Geingob returned from the United States of America on January 31, 2024, following a two-day novel treatment for cancerous cells.

He had courageously disclosed his diagnosis to the public just a month ago.

Having assumed office in 2015, Geingob was in his second and final term, serving as the chief architect of Namibia’s Constitution and a pivotal figure in the liberation struggle.

Mbumba eulogized him as a distinguished servant of the people and the pillar of the Namibian house.

In the wake of this profound loss, Vice President Mbumba appealed to the nation for calm.

“At this moment of deepest sorrow, I appeal to the nation to remain calm and collected while the Government attends to all necessary state arrangements, preparations, and other protocols,” Mbumba said.
