Mombasa Governor Waives Parking & Chicken Inspection Fees

On Friday, February 2, Governor Abdulswamad Nassir of Mombasa decided to eliminate all charges for residential parking in the Mombasa area.

Nassir mentioned that the relocation was overdue and aimed at assisting residents in managing the challenges posed by the elevated cost of living.

“In response to the rising cost of living, the approved Finance Bill 2024 gives relief to residents by waiving parking fees in residential areas as well as reducing clamping fees,”

“Moreover, towards tackling the rising cost of food, inspection fees for chicks and other poultry products have been waived,” Nassir stated.

All poultry items sold in Mombasa County’s butcher shops and retail stores are subject to the inspection fee.

Nassir eliminated the charges following the approval of the county’s budget for the 2024 fiscal year by the county executive committee during a session with his team.

This occurs simultaneously with the governor’s endorsement of the county workers’ collective bargaining agreement, aligning with the Kenya County Government Workers Union.

He explained that going forward, the salaries of county employees will be submitted to the salaries and remuneration commission for approval.

This waiver extends the exemption from penalties on land rates for landowners that were implemented in December 2023, lasting for a month.

On December 13, Nassir declared a complete exemption from penalties on land rates for the entire Mombasa County.

He encouraged landowners to make use of the land waiver, as they presently have outstanding land rates and accrued interests amounting to over Sh3 billion owed to the Mombasa government since 2018.

“The waiver takes effect immediately until the end of December. I hope land owners will take advantage of this so that come next year they will not have to pay penalties regarding the same,” said Nassir.
