Watchman Arrested in Embakasi Gas Explosion as DCI Commence Investigations

Law enforcement officials have apprehended a security guard associated with the Embakasi gas explosion, which has resulted in three fatalities and more than 220 injuries thus far.

DCI detectives apprehended the suspects shortly after being granted a 48-hour window to probe the case.

The police announced that the watchman was responsible for securing the location where the gas-loaded lorry exploded. Nevertheless, the DCI has not disclosed the charges that will be filed against the watchman, whose identity remains undisclosed.

Additional reports suggested that two technicians were also associated with the incident, with residents claiming that they were responsible for the fire that resulted in the explosion.

The residents facing challenges asserted that they noticed the smell of gas leakage at approximately 10 pm, coinciding with the time when mechanics were fixing a car that had malfunctioned nearby.

It remains uncertain whether the mechanics are the exclusive reason for the fire, as claimed because detectives from the DCI have not yet located their whereabouts.

The blaze was documented on Thursday evening following a gas explosion near a residential area in Embakasi.

Several residents criticized the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), pointing out that their complaints about the gas facility causing air pollution in the vicinity were disregarded by the authority.

“You can imagine the last two months I lived in that house, I didn’t step onto my balcony or even open the windows of my house. I couldnโ€™t handle the smell of the gas anymore,” a real estate specialist living in the area stated.

Mama Lucy Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) received numerous casualties who required medical attention. Isaac Mwaura, the Government Spokesperson, subsequently advised the public to stay away from the vicinity to facilitate the seamless execution of rescue operations and investigations.

Esther Passaris, the Women’s representative for Nairobi, expressed her commitment to assisting those impacted by the tragedy. She also urged supporters to contribute by donating blood at different hospitals.

Governor Johnson Sakaja has committed to exempting the Embakasi fire victims from all medical charges in Nairobi County. This initiative comes in conjunction with the commencement of the distribution of relief items to support those impacted by the incident.
