Sifuna, and Mungatana Clash In TV Interview Over ‘President Ruto Is A Liar’ Remarks

During a television interview on Thursday, there was a contentious exchange between Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana. The disagreement escalated when Senator Sifuna accused President William Ruto of dishonesty.

On Citizen TV’s Day Break program, Sifuna, a member of the opposition ODM party, expressed his inability to tolerate listening to Ruto during the State of the Nation address. He asserted that Ruto’s speech was filled with falsehoods and unsubstantiated statements.

Mungatana, a member of Ruto’s UDA party, interrupted Sifuna while defending the president, criticizing the Nairobi Senator for what he perceived as a disrespectful attitude towards elders.

“He is trying to conflate my decision not to sit there and listen to Ruto’s lies during the presidential debate-,” Sifuna said, to which Mungatana retorted; “Let’s be parliamentary.”

Sifuna promptly rejected the Tana River senator’s behavior, asserting that since they were not in parliament, there was no expectation for him to exhibit parliamentary conduct during a television interview.

“We are not in parliament; how can we be parliamentary? We are on TV! Kingi is not here to protect you,” Sifuna said, referring to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

“You can’t say-,” Mungatana tried to interject, but Sifuna quipped; “I can say. Who says I cannot?”

Mungatana objected to Sifuna’s assertion that President Ruto was dishonest, expressing that such a statement was disrespectful to his Pokomo customs, especially when referring to an elder.

“It is the English language. If something is not true, it is called a lie. We are not here under Pokomo customary law!” Sifuna shot.

Mungatana went on; “This is not an ODM public rally. You cannot come here and start calling the president a liar. Have some respect!”

“Sifuna should respect people. You cannot say the president is telling lies. If people are older than you.”

Sifuna however dismissed the Senator, saying Ruto was neither a Pokomo nor an elder.

“The president is a liar! I can say that a hundred times,” the Nairobi senator said.
