Why I Will Not Reveal My High School- Nuru Okanga
As Kenyans express doubts about the accuracy of Nuru Okanga’s scores in the recent Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, skepticism is growing surrounding his assertion of being accepted into secondary school.
Okanga, a dedicated follower of opposition leader Raila Odinga, now claims that he has successfully gained admission to a high school, refraining from disclosing the exact name.
In an interview with Gossipa2z, Okanga provided significant justifications for his choice to keep the identity of the secondary school confidential.
On January 29, we unexpectedly encountered him on Lusaka Road, accompanied by Migori politician Omar Hussein Ibrahim. Intrigued by the developing story, we delved deeper into the unfolding narrative.
Wondering about his absence from class on that Monday, Okanga explained that he had urgent matters to deal with, which required him to be away from the learning environment.
“Today, I had to take my kids to school. That is why I didn’t go to school. I have four kids whom I’m taking care of, and I have to take them to school, that is why I’m here, but if you look for me on the following day, you won’t get me because I’ll be busy in class,” Okanga said.
He mentions that he is keeping the name of the secondary school where he is currently studying confidential, citing security concerns as one of the reasons.
“For security purposes, and many issues that are ongoing in Kenya Kwanza government, I will not name the school for now. If I name the school, I will be putting the life of the school principal at risk,” he said.
Gossipa2z cannot confirm on his own whether he has truly gained admission to any high school for his Form 1 studies.
He additionally claims that the reason for not revealing the school where he took his KCPE exams aligns with the same justification for keeping details about his present secondary school undisclosed.
“When I sat for my standard eight exams, no one knew the school that I was registered at. I just did my exams, and it was all over social media, so people should just allow me to study, and when the time to sit for my KCSE comes, they will see me sitting for my exams.”

Okanga, one of the influential young figures in politics, asserts that he has become a noteworthy presence, being a subject of continuous discussion as an individual brand.
Lately, he attracted notice on social media by posting a picture of himself wearing a school uniform, set against a backdrop reminiscent of drawings from early childhood development (ECD) classes. However, online users criticized him for seeking attention and spreading inaccurate information.
Nevertheless, it’s important to highlight that Kenya has numerous adult education centers where he has the option to register, acquire knowledge, and earn a certificate. The significance of adult education has increased, providing structured and formal learning chances for those who didn’t have access to basic education in their earlier years.
This tradition gained traction following President Daniel Arap Moi’s proclamation for the initiation of a National Program aimed at eliminating illiteracy, commonly referred to as Non-Formal Education (Elimu ya gumbaru in Swahili), on the 15th anniversary of Kenya’s independence in 1978.
Since that time, there has been a notable advancement in Kenya’s adult education domain, experiencing a yearly expansion of 12.1 percent.
In 2018, Kenya experienced a rise in its adult literacy rate, reaching 81.5%, marking a significant improvement from the 2014 rate of 78.7%. This positive shift can be credited to programs such as ‘gumbaru,’ which have played a vital role in promoting adult education and actively contributing to the improvement of adult literacy levels in the nation.
