A citizen of Tanzania has received a 45-year prison sentence for possessing illegal drugs while on a journey in Mombasa.

In March 2021, Maimuna Jumanne Amir was arrested at Moi International Airport with 5,389 grams of heroin valued at Ksh.16,167,000.

As per the information from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Amir had hidden the stash of drugs inside a black bag.

Principal Magistrate Martin Rabera, delivering his verdict at the Mombasa Law Courts, handed down a 35-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and an additional 10 years for the possession of drugs.

“The accused was fined Ksh.48,501,000 (three times the value of the drugs in her possession), in default, served 10 years in prison for the offense of trafficking in narcotic drugs, contrary to Section 4(a) of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act No. 4 of 1994,” stated the ODPP.

“She was also sentenced to 35 years in prison. The accused committed the offense jointly with others not before the court, on 14th March 2021 at Moi International Airport in Changamwe Sub-county within Mombasa County.”

In the judgment, Magistrate Rabera declared that Barbara Sombo, leading the prosecution, convincingly established the case by presenting 16 witnesses, leaving no doubt about the guilt.
