Business people are counting losses after a fire broke out at City Stadium in Nairobi on Tuesday evening, January 30.

Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident, stating that the fire occurred at the Jogoo Road roundabout.

โ€œA fire incident has been reported near City Stadium, Nairobi County, impacting local businesses, response teams have been activated,โ€ noted the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.ย

In videos shared by eyewitnesses, onlookers could be seen standing at a distance as the fire wreaked havoc, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

A fire brigade believed to belong to the Nairobi County government could be seen in the vicinity.ย

However, it was yet to be clear whether the firefighters were doing much to contain the fire which appeared to be worsening.

Volunteers were also seen pushing onlookers behind to contain the surging crowd.

Earlier a section of Kenyan had shared photos of the billowing smoke online, with the majority trying to pinpoint the location of the fire.

The amount of loss incurred by the businesses, the majority of which are small-scale traders and second-hand cloth sellers, is yet to be ascertained.

Last year, Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja, pledged to build a fire station at Gikomba Market to curb the recurring fires around the area.

The station was expected to serve not only the market but also other key facilities outside Nairobi CBD and along Jogoo Road.ย
