Kenyan Wanted In US Over Girlfriend Margaret Mbitu’s Death Arrested in Nairobi Night Club

A Kenyan individual, sought by the United States in connection with the demise of his American girlfriend, a nurse in Boston, has been apprehended in the Westlands area of Nairobi.

Investigators stated that they have apprehended the individual sought in connection with the alleged homicide of Margaret Mbitu, which occurred at various times between October 30, 2023, and November 4, 2023, in Boston, USA.

Kevin Kangethe is wanted for the murder of his girlfriend Margaret Mbitu.

On Monday night, authorities apprehended the suspect at a club based on information provided by undisclosed sources.

Police said the man had an Interpol Red Notice on his head.

Since November of the previous year, he had been evading authorities after traveling from the United States to Kenya.

High-ranking authorities at Gigiri police station reported that they had communicated with the DCI headquarters and were anticipating identifiers from the US police to assist in expediting the identification process for the individual currently held in custody.

“We have a man believed to be the suspect who is wanted in the US over alleged murder. We are waiting for more profiling to know the way forward,” a senior official aware of the probe said.

If his identity is confirmed, authorities stated that they will coordinate with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to initiate the extradition proceedings.

In November of last year, Kenyan investigators were tasked by US authorities with apprehending a suspect accused of murder in Massachusetts.

The mother of the victim mentioned that she intended to end her relationship with the alleged perpetrator.

On November 2, a warrant for arrest was issued following the discovery of the 31-year-old Margaret’s body in a vehicle at the Central Parking garage of Boston’s Logan Airport the previous night by the Massachusetts State Police.

Investigators have paid visits to a residence in Thogoto, Kiambu County, suspected to belong to the individual in question; however, they were unable to locate him.

Officials in the US had also urged the suspect to surrender.

“We urge this suspect to turn himself to authorities before he or anyone else gets hurt. We are making every effort possible to apprehend him and to begin the process of seeking justice for Margaret Mbitu and those mourning her tragic death,” Suffolk County DA Kevin Hayden said in a statement then.

Police in the Whitman region of the United States reported that Margaret was last observed departing her workplace in Halifax at approximately 11 pm on October 30th.

At a later juncture, authorities stated that she had been the victim of a homicide.

Rose Mbitu, Margaret’s mother, informed the US media that her daughter intended to end her relationship with the individual in question.

At 6:30 pm on November 1, authorities in Boston discovered Margaret’s vehicle containing her deceased body.

American officials are firmly convinced that the 40-year-old suspect committed the murder of Magret, known affectionately to her family and close friends, before purchasing tickets for a 16-hour flight to Nairobi. Detectives believe this action was taken in an attempt to evade prosecution.

It has recently been revealed that the tickets were purchased in the early hours of October 31, shortly after Margaret’s passing.

Massachusetts officials aim to utilize the extradition agreement between Kenya and the United States, which resulted in the sentencing of two individuals from the infamous Akasha family for drug trafficking and related offenses.

Initial findings from the vehicle of the deceased suggested that the ex-partner was the main person of interest.

Margaret resided with her family in Whitman and held a position at Boston Area Multi-Services Inc (BAMSI) in Brockton, located approximately 7.2 kilometers from her home.

On the night of October 30, she traveled a distance of 62 kilometers to reach Boston Logan Airport to meet the individual in question.

He resided in Lowell, which was situated 80 kilometers away from Margaret’s residence in Whitman.

According to reports from local media, surveillance video indicated that Margaret’s vehicle was seen in both Lowell and Chelsea, Massachusetts, on the day preceding her death.

Last October 30, the nurse, who is 31 years old, finished her shift and left at 11 pm.

She entered her Toyota Venza, which was white, and departed, marking the final occasion she would be witnessed alive.

People in Margaret’s inner circle were aware that she would come back home following her work hours. Concerns arose when she failed to return home, and her family became worried after attempts to reach her by phone were unsuccessful.

It remains uncertain whether she was aware that her partner intended to journey to Kenya.

48 hours later, Margaret’s remains were discovered inside her vehicle by Massachusetts State Police officers. Officials have disclosed minimal information, but early indications suggest that the ex-partner is the primary person of interest.

Margaret became a naturalized citizen of the United States. In 2018, she completed her studies at Quincy College and subsequently joined Bamsi, a non-profit organization.
