Nairobi Doctors Slap Ultimatum On Governor Sakaja Over Recruitment
On Monday, Davji Atellah, the Director General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), expressed concerns about the hiring process for doctors in Nairobi County.
Atellah urged Governor Johnson Sakaja in a statement to address the issue, warning that failure to do so would prompt him to advocate for a strike throughout the county.
Atellah disclosed that although the union had taken legal action to address the issue, a strike would bring a swift resolution to the turmoil in Nairobi and other counties.
The Secretary-General also revealed that significant actions would be implemented in response to what he characterized as the county government’s unprofessional treatment of employed doctors.
He clarified that following discussions with the medical professionals, it was revealed that the county government terminated their employment and publicly announced their positions, urging them to submit new applications.
As per the impacted physicians, the choice to terminate their employment was sudden, leaving them in a state of uncertainty.
“Our young colleagues are faced with precarity brought about by job insecurity after the County decided not to continue engaging them after February, instead choosing to advertise their positions and asking them to reapply and face fresh interviews,” Atellah remarked in a statement.

Moreover, Atellah disclosed that physicians who chose to reapply for positions were required to provide bribes and other favors to secure employment.
The SG additionally observed that this constituted an abuse of authority, urging Governor Sakaja to take swift action before the situation worsened.
He highlighted that the Nairobi County Government was engaging in unjust labor practices towards the doctors. These practices encompassed issues such as neglecting to remit third-party deductions, imposing double taxation on clinics owned and operated by doctors, and subjecting locums to PAYE taxation, among other infractions.
“This is the reason why last evening a collective and resounding resolution was made by all in attendance to “ STRIKE HARD! We shall shut down all health services in this city if the employers want to treat doctors like slaves as they profit from their sweat and blood,” he stated.
The Secretary-General underscored the importance of recognizing that doctors play a crucial role in delivering essential services to the people of Kenya, and they should not have to plead for fair working conditions and adequate compensation.
He strongly urged all members of the union to come together and actively advocate for their essential human and labor rights.
