Kenyans Poke Holes Into CS Murkomen’s Tendency to Quote Ksh700M for Every Project

On Saturday, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen faced criticism for stating that each government project would cost Ksh700 million.

This followed his declaration that the installation of toll stations on major highways would amount to a cost of Ksh700 million.

Kenyans pointed out instances when the Cabinet Secretary repeatedly mentioned the ‘700’ number while citing the funds required for different projects.

In July 2023, Murkomen disclosed that a sum of Ksh700 million was needed to address the repairs necessitated by the destruction inflicted upon the Nairobi Expressway during countrywide demonstrations.

Some Kenyan individuals expressed the view that the reported numbers were inflated to misappropriate public funds.

Some individuals expressed the viewpoint that certain government officials were disconnected from reality, causing them to provide inflated estimates for government projects.

At the same time, some playfully suggested that 700 might be his fortunate number, leading to his frequent use of it.

President William Ruto faced criticism for mentioning a figure of 120,000 while discussing Kenyans who have obtained digital employment, secured jobs through the affordable housing plan, and gained employment in the agricultural sector.

Regarding Murkomen, in addition to the finances allocated for maintenance and toll stations, the Cabinet Secretary disclosed in December of the previous year that Ksh700 billion would be needed to finish the ongoing road projects.

“Out of the Ksh700 billion required, Ksh150 billion is pending bills for road works that are already done while we have in this year’s budget only Ksh46 billion for it,” Murkomen revealed.

He sanctioned a bonus disbursement of Ksh700 million for the staff of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

Kenyans have expressed disapproval of CS Murkomen’s suggestion, citing concerns about the exorbitant cost of living and the alleged misuse of public funds.
