Ndii Calls Out Kenyans Buying Ksh 9K Fish While Complaining of Tough Economy
On Thursday, David Ndii, the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Economic Advisors, criticized individuals in Kenya with imprudent spending habits who point fingers at the government for the challenging economic conditions.
Using his X account, the economist highlighted individuals in Kenya who opt for a Ksh9,000 fish, overlooking more affordable options such as Tilapia, which is priced at only Ksh799.
“My apologies to upper deck people that fresh Atlantic Salmon price is up 40%. Not only is Tilapia still affordable, but it also puts money in people’s pockets,” Ndii noted.
“My tweet is not addressed to the majority,” he added.
According to Ndii, while tilapia fish was affordable it also lacked a carbon footprint.
Ndii was addressing accounts that illustrated the consequences of the depreciating value of the shilling, such as increased food costs and a surge in public debt.
David Ndii rejected the claims made by certain media sources indicating a substantial decline in Kenya’s exports due to currency fluctuations.

Ideally, a devalued shilling should suggest a rise in exports as products and services become more affordable in the global market.
The elevated cost of living in Kenya, causing increased hardship among its citizens, is primarily attributed to the depreciation of the shilling against the dollar, exacerbated by rising inflation rates.
It recently reached a record low of 160 unit points against the dollar, marking a significant decrease.
During his State of the Nation address in Parliament on November 9, 2023, President William Ruto cautioned about challenging economic conditions. He highlighted the government’s intention to address the nation’s outstanding debts, including the Eurobond, amidst the anticipated difficulties.
“The new direction may not be easy but it is ethical, responsible, prudent, and most importantly necessary. We have had to make hard decisions and make painful choices because we owe the people of Kenya to do the right things and to confront facts as they are,” Ruto remarked.
