Ruto Promises Creation of Teso County

On Sunday, January 21, President William Ruto announced his intention to advocate for the establishment of Teso County, which he mentioned would be formed by dividing Busia.

Addressing a political gathering in the area, Ruto mentioned that though it posed challenges, he pledged to advocate for the matter as the Head of State.

The establishment of Teso County has been a source of disagreement in the area, and this became apparent during Ruto’s visit when he was unexpectedly interrupted while delivering his speech to address the request.

โ€œWhat you are asking me is hard but I will try my best,โ€ Ruto promised amidst cheers from Teso residents.

The President cautioned that he would not fulfill the appeal from Teso residents unless they ceased supporting his political opponents at the polls.

He highlighted his efforts in establishing roads, building health facilities, and providing various social amenities in the region. Despite these accomplishments, the community consistently favored Raila Odinga from the Azimio leadership as their preferred presidential candidate.

โ€œIf you want me to continue working for you, then you must also reciprocate during the voting period,โ€ he stated after being asked to facilitate the creation of Teso County.

Leaders from the Western region, including Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, who were accompanying the President, assured Ruto of political support.

Residents of Teso County and Saboti County proposed the establishment of these regions, separated from Trans Nzoia, as part of their recommendations to the National Dialogue Committee.

The suggestions put forth by the Committee will be deliberated in Parliament in February, followed by their submission to President Ruto and Azimio Leader Raila Odinga.

During a tour in the region on January 16, Raila declined the proposal to establish Teso County, similar to his stance on a previous tour.

โ€œA nation like the United States has 52 States with Texas being bigger than Kenya. The country has 47 counties, and when the counties are large, development is well-staffed. Smaller counties are not the solution,โ€ Raila remarked then.

He clarified that the original intention was to reduce the number of counties, with the initial proposal considering Kakamega and Bungoma as a single county.
