Kenyan Schools Grapple with Suspense: 2023 KCSE Results Released After Alleged Cheating Scandal Investigation
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has ultimately published the outcomes of certain KCSE candidates whose scores were initially held back due to suspected academic misconduct.
The Cardinal Otunga Boys fraternity in Kisii experienced great joy on Friday morning upon receiving the 2023 KCSE exam results for all 432 students who took the test.
In the announcement of the 2023 KCSE outcomes, the Ministry of Education, via KNEC, identified 4,113 candidates nationwide whose results were flagged due to suspected violations of examination regulations.
Nevertheless, there is increased anxiety in certain schools where students have not yet received their examination outcomes.
“I wish to inform the general public that we finally have 100% of the results and their results are very impressive because all of them are transiting to the university,” Cardinal Otunga school Principal Albert Ombiro said.
Out of the 432 candidates who registered, the latest student at the school received a grade of B-. According to the Principal, among the students, there were 6 with an A, 60 with an A-, 137 with a B+, and 26 with a B-.
Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere stated: “All of us need to take responsibility if the school has not done well, it’s not just the candidate, it is all the stakeholders…so let us not get to this miss advice of chasing the principal on basis of poor performance.”
Nyakongo Secondary School also experienced a collective exhale of relief when the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) unveiled the previously withheld results for the entire 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort, clearing the school of any suspected instances of malpractice involving its 263 students.

Mabera Secondary School in Migori County has now obtained the results that were previously withheld by the examination authority.
In Nandi County, a sense of increased tension surrounds Samoei Secondary School as it awaits the release of its examination results. Local Member of Parliament Benard Kutur has voiced his dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Education’s choice to withhold the results.
“There was no hurry of releasing results without not being conscious of people and the suffering parents are going through…you should have done investigations before saying these results have been canceled because now you’re holding students on ransom as others are celebrating…everybody is in limbo,” aid the Nandi Hills lawmaker.
Results for 4,113 candidates were flagged by KNEC due to suspected involvement in exam malpractice.
A unique committee formed by the Ministry of Education was tasked with determining the destiny of individuals. This committee would interview school principals affected by the situation to inquire about their assertions.
