Kalonzo Reveals Gideon Moi’s Stand on Azimio After Missing All Key Meetings

On Tuesday, January 16, Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka found himself compelled to justify the prolonged absence of former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi from Azimio gatherings and functions.

Addressing the National Executive Committee (NEC) gathering of the Wiper Party, Kalonzo commented that Moi continued to align with the Azimio principles.

He stated that all the leaders within the Azimio coalition agreed, and he dismissed any speculation about a potential division as baseless.

โ€œI was in a meeting with Gideon Moi today in the morning and he assured me that he is firmly in Azimio,โ€ Kalonzo revealed.

Former Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter (Left), Major General Mohamed Badi (Centre) and Gideon Moi (Second Right) during the wedding of his son Kigen on Saturday, May 6, 2023.ย

Kalonzo additionally stated that even though the KANU party leader didn’t directly take part in any Azimio gatherings, he consistently played a role indirectly.

โ€œEven during the protests, he was represented by KANU Secretary General George Wainaina,โ€ he remarked.

Gideon Moi was one of the Azimio principals who advocated for Raila Odinga during the 2022 Presidential election.

Right after the elections, Gideon Moi stepped back from active participation in political affairs, seldom appearing in public political gatherings. Instead, he has opted to engage in family and social events.

Speculation about a division within Azimio arose due to public disputes regarding decisions taken by the National Dialogue Committee, where Kalonzo Musyoka served as a co-chair.

Eugene Wamalwa, the ex-Defence Cabinet Secretary, and Martha Karua, the leader of Narc Kenya Party, declared their opposition to the suggestions put forth by Kalonzo’s team.

In a further intensification of the disputes, Kalonzo criticized Martha Karua and other Azimio leaders from Mt Kenya for establishing a political group called Kamwene.

โ€œThis thing means individualism. It’s a terrible political philosophy. I would advise my friends to leave it and we stick together in Azimio,” he stated during a media interview.

Martha Karua in response remarked that Kalonzo was politically afraid of Kamwene.

Kalonzo who has since announced his bid for the presidency in 2027 was further challenged by Wamalwa who is also angling for the presidency.

The former Vice President during the NEC considered the disagreements normal and stated that the unity was solid.ย
