President Ruto Relocates KDF Training Camp From Eldoret to Kerio Valley to Tame Banditry
On Sunday, January 14, President William Ruto declared the transfer of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) training camp from Eldoret to Kerio Valley.
Addressing a church congregation in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet, the President mentioned that the decision was driven by the necessity to curb banditry and insecurity in the troubled area.
During his address, Ruto mentioned that the transfer of the training camp marked only the first phase, as the government intended to set up a lasting military facility in the area.
“I want to assure the people of Kerio Valley, from Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, and Samburu to Turkana, that they are going to enjoy peace,” stated President Ruto.
In addition to moving the camp, the president also declared the establishment of two sub-counties, which will be known as Kerio Valley and Kolowa, respectively.
Additionally, he gave an ultimatum to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, directing him to ensure the functionality of both sub-counties within ninety days.
Inhabitants of Kerio Valley and Northern Kenya have been confronted with persistent incidents of livestock theft and criminal activities, resulting in an increasing loss of lives.

Four days ago, in a recent assault by bandits in North Baringo, five individuals lost their lives in ambushes at two road intersections, all on the same day.
One of the occurrences included an incident where a family of three on a motorcycle was shot while en route to a graduation ceremony for their relative at the Yatia-Chemoe route junction.
The family suffered injuries, and the man passed away immediately, while the wife and a three-year-old child later succumbed to their injuries at a nearby hospital.
On the same day, a second event occurred, involving a shooting incident in Kagir, Baringo County, where two National Police Reservists (NPRs) were fatally shot.
Nevertheless, the President assured the residents that the occurrences of banditry would soon become history, emphasizing that the government is set to enhance security measures in the region.
“I am asking those who have illegal arms to surrender them to the government or face the consequences,” emphasized President Ruto.
