Patient Breathing on Life Support Dropped at Kenya Power Offices Over Constant Outages
A Mtwapa family in Kilifi County chose to bring their critically ill relative, who relies on life support, to the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Offices to obtain electricity.
Addressing the situation on Friday, the family expressed their distress, stating that they had no choice but to take action after being without power for over 48 hours.
As the patient depends on electricity for her nebulizer usage approximately four times daily, the family requires prompt access to electricity. A nebulizer is a device utilized by individuals to administer their medication as a mist, which is then inhaled into the lungs.
“I have my sister-in-law who uses a nebulizer frequently. I was really sad and angry today that we had to bring her here at the Kenya Power offices to try and get electricity so that she can nebulize,” the sister-in-law to the patient stated.
Another relative expressed frustration over numerous efforts to promptly attract the attention of Kenya Power.
“I was only getting a reference number after reference number with no assistance offered,” she lamented.
The family committed to remain with the patient at the KPLC offices until their situation is resolved, and power is restored to their residence.

“It looks like they will just have to stay here because around 8 to 8.30 is when she has to use another dose of the nebulizer,” the sister-in-law added.
She additionally mentioned that the extended power outage also impacted their neighbor, who is battling cancer and depends on electricity for medical treatment.
“I have a question for Kenya Power. Why do we always have a problem and why is their customer care always lying to us?” She enquired.
The family urged for a prompt investigation and expedited processing of their case, alleging that Kenya Power was negligent, despite having adequate information about their situation.
“I would like to get an update on my case but every time I call customer care, they keep lying to me, telling me that they are on the way yet we never receive their services,” the aggrieved family spokesperson complained.
They expressed regret over having to dispose of their perishable food items, which had become stale shortly after the power outage. The family’s complaints were still awaiting a response from Kenya Power. However, the company’s employees did assist by accommodating the patient at their offices.
