Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have apprehended a suspect who impersonated former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to defraud unsuspecting parents.
Newton Paul Kengere, 29, is suspected of obtaining thousands of shillings from unsuspecting members of the public in an educational loan advance ruse.
The suspect was apprehended at his home in the Kenyenya sub-county, where a handset he was using to send deceptive but fake messages to vulnerable targets was discovered.

Several SIM cards were also seized during the operation on Thursday, January 11.
The arrest follows a complaint filed at the Capital Hill Police station by Sonko, who reported several accounts purporting to be his official handles.

To dupe his victims, the suspect pretended to be a member of the Sonko Rescue Team and was coordinating a program to assist needy parents with school fees.
He promised his victims that he would assist them in obtaining interest-free loans if they paid Ksh.1000 for registration.
He would also ask the victims to send their details, including their phone numbers, the location they were in, and what purpose the loan would be used for.
According to the police, Kengere would beat his feet as soon as the victims sent their registration fee, quickly shifting from a persistent caller to the aphoristic, “Patience pays.”
He was traced to his village home by the DCI Nairobi Area Crime Research and Intelligence Unit team.
He will be arraigned on Friday, January 19.
