Workers Get 16% Increase After Atwoli’s Intervention

On Wednesday, April 10, more than 3,350 unionized employees at Kakuzi PLC were granted a raise of 16 percent in their salaries.

This occurred after the endorsement of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) alongside the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union (KPAWU).

Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU-K), endorsed the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) on behalf of KPAWU.

โ€œI wish to thank the management of Kakuzi PLC for the quick response to my proposal to negotiate a CBA that will cushion workers from the high cost of living,โ€ Atwoli stated following the pay rise.

The employees will benefit from higher wages beginning in January 2024 and continuing for a duration of two years.

Kakuzi PLC, led by Managing Director Chris Flowers, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of its employees, which led to the decision to increase their pay.

โ€œKakuzi PLC appreciates the support that Atwoli and the KPAWU Leadership extended to complete the CBA negotiations successfully,โ€ the company spoke of the COTU boss.

โ€œAs a responsible company, our employeesโ€™ welfare is paramount, and this signing affirms our commitment to continue providing a safe workplace while maintaining good relationships between the company, employees, and the Union.โ€

Atwoli, addressing the gathering in Nakuru, remarked that this marked the inaugural round of discussions with several companies aimed at raising wages and enhancing employee well-being, with more such negotiations to follow.

The Secretary General of COTU encouraged other domestic businesses in Kenya to take into account the challenges faced by employees affiliated with labor unions.

Atwoli commented that given the challenging economic circumstances currently, it’s an advantageous moment for employees to get an increase in their wages.

โ€œI will include corporate commitments to clear CBA negotiations in time as the Union continues to pursue a win-win strategy cognizant of the national and global economic challenges,โ€ he added.
