Govt Demolishes Former CS Amina Mohamed’s Mansion
On Tuesday, the government demolished the residence of Amina Mohammed, the former Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, in Kakamega County.
Information suggests that the luxurious house situated in the prestigious Milimani Estate was torn down to make room for the development of President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing initiative.
A group from the demolition team arrived and started demolishing the house that, according to reports, the diplomat’s brother obtained in 2019.
While recounting the event, the house caretaker revealed that the group gained entry to the property by going through the fence and then proceeded to destroy the house.
The residence owned by Lucas Nandih Shamallah was demolished in front of everyone, even though there was an initial court order demanding an immediate stop to the scheduled demolitions.
In October of the previous year, the Kakamega Environment and Land Court issued directives halting the government’s demolition of the luxurious residence until a hearing and resolution of a lawsuit brought forth by Shamallah.

The officials from the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, the Regional Commissioner for the Western region, and the Attorney General were named as the respondents in the case filed by the owner.
On November 30th the previous year, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa found it necessary to address and clarify his detachment from demolitions. This came about when some residents criticized the County Government for demolishing homes without prior notification.
“Regarding the ongoing demolitions of property in the Milimani area within Kakamega town, I wish to state that we were not part of those activities,” the Governor clarified.
Among those who were also affected by the demolitions besides the CS include Billionaire Jaswant Singh Rai, the chairman of the West Kenya Sugar Company.
On December 1, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga vowed to move to court in a bid to squash the position of the Kakamega County Regional Commissioner who is claimed to have ordered the ongoing demolitions.
While addressing residents in Kakamega, Odinga termed the Regional Commissioner’s post as unconstitutional and therefore illegal.
“This is a relic of colonialism that we must remove, and we will go to court to declare this so-called provincial administration unconstitutional. County commissioners have no powers to interfere with the governor. The so-called regional commissioners are illegal, and there are no regions in our government structure,” the former Prime Minister noted.
“This is an act of brutality that has been meted against our people here in Kakamega. It is terrible that this should be happening under the administration of a government that came to power promising to be pro-people.”
