Madonna Fights Back Against Ageist Attacks
After presenting at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, Madonna responded to criticism of her appearance.
In her most recent Instagram post, the multi-award-winning singer lamented being “caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates our world” after a photo of her face went viral online and sparked a torrent of negative comments.
While Madonna was introducing Kim Petras and Sam Smith’s performance of “Unholy,” the photo was taken. Smith identifies as nonbinary, whereas Petras became the first transgender woman to perform openly at the event.
Madonna called it a “historic moment,” adding, “Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech โ which was about giving thanks for the courage of artists like Sam and Kim โ many people chose to only discuss close-up photographs of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer who would distort anyone’s face!”

Madonna’s Instagram page was flooded with comments describing her as frightening and unrecognizable, as well as denouncing her alleged “obsession with plastic surgery”; however, the singer has never addressed rumors of cosmetic enhancements publicly.
Piers Morgan, who is frequently criticized for making hateful and sexist remarks, devoted a segment of his Talk TV show “Piers Morgan Uncensored” to the viral photo.
The 64-year-old musician responded to the comments on Instagram, stating that the world “refuses to celebrate women over 45.”
Madonna is accustomed to being thrust into the public eye due to a controversial appearance.
However, the singer, who famously wore a satin slip dress in the music video for “Like a Prayer” in 1989 and a Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra during her Blond Ambition world tour in 1990, has never appeared to be deterred by public opinion.

She wrote in the post, “I have never apologized for any of my creative decisions or the way I look or dress, and I won’t start now.”
“I have been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come.”
