Ruto Escalates War Against CJ Koome’s Judiciary & Law Society of Kenya

President William Ruto has declined to give in to CJ Koome and LSK warnings and instead reiterated that the Judiciary harbors rogue elements out to sabotage his legacy.

The President further dismissed the Law Society of Kenya’s complaints that the Executive was hindering the course of Justice through intimidation of the Judiciary.

Ruto in a statement issued by Government Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed remarked that it was unfair to accuse him of impending independence of the Judiciary considering he had appointed Judges who had earlier been denied their appointments by the former administration.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed addresses the press on August 4, 2023.

“However, legislative impunity, by its own measures, is also unacceptable and so is judicial impunity,” he castigated the LSK and Judiciary.

Ruto added that as the Head of State, it was his constitutional obligation to protect Kenyan citizens from judicial misconduct perpetrated by corrupt officers colluding with vested interests.

“Corruption must not find refuge behind the shield of judicial independence,” he remarked adding that there is a duty to expose and hold accountable those who engage in corrupt practices.ย

In defense of his attack on the Judiciary, Ruto pointed out that in December, independent institutions were prevented from charging suspects of corruption.

He added that while the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) together with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were discharging their constitutional mandate, those efforts were frustrated by the circumnavigation of the criminal justice system.

Invoking the name of the third president, Ruto stated, “We are back to the clamor for judiciary reforms last witnessed during President Mwai Kibaki’s tenure.”

Ruto vowed to continue advocating for a just judicial system insisting it was part of his obligations to the electorate.

“The President cannot be expected to be a mere observer in the face of such injustices. He cannot remain mum,” the statement read.

His statement was issued moments after Chief Justice Martha Koome called out perceived judicial intimidation by the Executive and urged judges and judicial officials to carry on with their work without fear of reproach or coercion.

LSK also threatened to carry out nationwide demonstrations against Ruto next week.ย
