High Court Orders Police Chief Koome in Omatatah vs. Ruto Clash

The High Court has directed Inspector General Japhet Koome to permit Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah to provide a statement regarding purported threats on his life attributed to President William Ruto.

Today, Justice EC Mwita granted the orders in a legal matter initiated by Omtatah on December 29, 2023.

โ€œIt is hereby ordered that the pleading be served,โ€ read part of the court order.

Additionally, Justice Mwita from the Milimani High Court instructed IG Koome to submit a response within 14 days of receiving the notice.

The issue will be brought up in court on January 24, 2024, to determine the next steps.

Omtatah alleged that he was driven off by law enforcement officials at Nyanchwa Police Station on December 19 when he tried to raise accusations against Ruto for allegedly making death threats against critics of the Housing Levy.

Following an unsuccessful effort to persuade the officers to let him state on record, he went to Mosocho Police Station, only to be turned away once more.

Therefore, as a final option, he looked to the Judiciary to pursue legal action and exerted pressure on the police to secure his rights.

In the legal document submitted to the court, Omtatah claimed that during an event in Mosocho, Kisii, on December 16, Ruto made threatening statements towards him and other involved parties, suggesting harm or danger.

Ruto stated firmly that he would persist in his pursuit to establish his legacy. Consequently, he was given a metaphorical sword by his predecessor, symbolizing his responsibility to deal with those who oppose the housing levy.

“You know I was given a sword. Do you think it’s for cutting vegetables? It’s for dealing with all these crooks here. I will uproot them completely, and Kenya will move forward,” Ruto stated.
