A law enforcement officer stationed at Kangema Police Station in Murang’a County is in critical condition after self-inflicting a gunshot wound to the mouth while at the station.

Allegedly, the officer was working when the event occurred. Nonetheless, his fellow officers quickly came to his assistance and transported him to Murang’a Level 5 Hospital for urgent medical care and admission.

Physicians indicated that the bullet had become embedded in the officer’s head, necessitating surgery for its extraction.

They rushed to stabilize his state before he succumbed to severe bleeding.

This recent instance of a suicide attempt contributes to the growing trend of law enforcement officers trying to use firearms to take their own lives while on duty.

The previous week, a Timau Police Station officer in Meru County took his own life by shooting himself at his residence, leaving a suicide note addressed to his partner. After the incident, authorities found an AK 47 rifle, and his body was transported to the morgue awaiting an autopsy.

Information provided by the National Police Service (NPS) indicates that a minimum of 12,000 officers are experiencing mental health challenges primarily stemming from the nature of their jobs and the high-pressure work environment they face.

Additional reports suggested that law enforcement officers and security personnel experienced significant job-related stress, while some expressed frustration due to delayed payment of their salaries.

One more factor that led officers to consider suicide was the discovery of unfaithfulness in their relationships. In the year 2023, approximately three officers took their own lives upon finding out about their spouse’s infidelity.

At the beginning of 2023, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi collaborated with the National Police Service (NPS) to support the rehabilitation of police officers facing mental health challenges.

Amos Gathecha, the Principal Secretary of Public Service, stated that there had been an increase in the count of officers requiring counseling for depression, going up from 5,000 to 13,000 between the years 2022 and 2023.

Counselors, medical professionals, and psychologists advise seeking assistance whenever you encounter any mental health concerns.ย Contact the toll-free hotline, 1199, provided by the Kenya Red Cross, for support.
